The kitchen is almost done

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

Well, folks, our house is slowly looking better. Here’s a before-and-after of the kitchen for you:

The floor is still 10-year-old scratched-up linoleum with pink and blue flowers… eventually we hope to replace that. I’d also like to install track lighting over the left counter area one of these days. But for now, we’re pretty happy with it.

Various mundanities

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Our yard is no longer overgrown, and we have a garden. It looks like this:

And this insane vine was slowly digesting our porch:

I didn’t realize how massive it was until I cut it all off.

The porch looks better now.

In other news, we’re flying to California on Saturday to visit some of Sharon’s family. I’m definitely looking forward to this… I’m tired!

Over and out.

Our (finally) functional dryer

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

If you ever need to learn how to fix an appliance, go to fixitnow.com.

A washer and dryer came with our house, but they were provided in “as-is” condition. Turned out that the dryer went round and round, but wouldn’t heat. Enter fixitnow.com.  It’s a blog written by the “Samurai Appliance Repair Man”.  The guy is funny, and he really knows his stuff.  I used his Online Dryer Diagnostic Guide to troubleshoot my dryer, and it turns out that this little beastie was my problem:

Gas dryer boost/hold hoil

In case you’re wondering (and I know you are) it’s the boost/hold coil that is involved in opening the gas valve inside the dryer.  Thankfully eBay has everything, so it was a cheap & easy fix.

Hooray for the internet.

Vicky Beeching – Yesterday, Today, and Forever

Last Friday we closed on our house.  Now begins the tax of fixing it up.

Tuesday I mowed my own lawn for the first time ever.  Wow.  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve mown (Is mown even a word? No wonder people trying to learn English get so frustrated with all the ridiculous irregularities and exceptions) my parents’ lawn plenty of times, but this is the first time I’ve ever had to mow my own piece of turf.  Don’t know why that’s so exciting, but it is.  Well anyway, some of the grass was about 8” high, so that was interesting.

When we get things fixed up a little I’ll post pictures…
